Calling Tips for Citizens

Be brief and direct.

Staff who answer phones log calls by issue. State the bill number or topic, your position, and that you are a constituent.

Always identify your ZIP code.

Offices count constituent contacts separately. Saying "I'm a constituent in ZIP 75201" weights your call appropriately.

Be respectful — even when you disagree.

Staffers remember tone. Polite, firm constituents who call regularly become trusted voices. Loud, abusive callers get filtered out.

Follow up in writing.

A call plus an email plus a letter all count separately. Major votes are won and lost by which side mobilizes the most contacts.
